2017 Veteran of the Year
SACRAMENTO - Assemblymember Anna M. Caballero honored John Goodhope as the 30th Assembly District Veteran of the Year. John is a veteran who served in the Army from 1978-1987. His nine years of service as the Stinger missile man in the 16 Sierra / Papa Red Eye Chaparral took him all over the world. He was stationed two separate times in Germany, endured extensive jungle training in Panama, completed special defense training on the island of Crete off the coast of Greece, and finished a tour in Fort Ord. While serving, John demonstrated exemplary character throughout his career from graduating third in his class in basic training, and being one of the first to graduate from the Stinger Air Defense School while in Germany. Mr. Goodhope was discharged as a Staff Sergeant and earned two Good Conduct medals, two Overseas Ribbons, an Army Achievement Medal, and the honor of Expert F-16 Rifleman grenade and 45 caliber. While home in California’s 30th District, John’s service remains steadfast for both military and community activism. He is a member of the American Legion Post 31, a member of the Elks Lodge, a Board Member for the Central Coast Center for Independent Living, and continues to be a part of the hospitality industry.
