FREE Volunteer Income Tax Assistance in Salinas

Tuesday, March 14, 2017

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) announced a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and California Earned Income Tax Credit (Cal EITC) workshop in her district. The event takes place today at Hartnell College, starting at 5 p.m. Assemblymember Caballero has partnered with Board of Equalization, Chair Fiona Ma, and Monterey United Way to bring this event to Salinas Valley residents.

On Monday, Assemblymember Anna Caballero’s AB 225, California Earned Income Tax Credit, was passed by the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee. The bill has now been referred to the Appropriations Committee. AB 225 would allow more working families to qualify for the EITC and would also open eligibility to full-time minimum wage earners. The Assemblymember invites residents in her district to attend tonight’s VITA event, complete their taxes on-site, and signup for the EITC.

“Residents in my district and our state are hard workers—farmers, laborers, teachers, and minimum wage workers should be afforded the opportunity to apply for the EITC.  However, many of these families make over the EITC income threshold and simply do not qualify.  It’s a shame that minimum wage workers making less than $22,000 a year do not qualify!  We need to continue our fight for our hard-working California families,” said Assemblymember Anna M. Caballero. Individuals and families may not be aware of the EITC, and this benefit needs to continue to be promoted statewide.

“It’s sad that families making minimum wage cannot qualify for the California earned income tax credit. The current level is so low! Families have to choose between buying food and paying for clothes for their family. AB 225 will help provide extra money in their pockets to help families buy basic necessities,” said California State Board of Equalization Member Fiona Ma, CPA.

In order to help provide a long-term solution, AB 225 would also adjust the EITC to the minimum wage increase through 2022. To claim the EITC, residents must file a tax return for the previous year.
