State Assembly Approves Bill to Protect Immigrants from Fraud
SACRAMENTO – Today Assemblymember Anna Caballero (D–Salinas) announced the passage of AB 638 in the Assembly. AB 638 would protect immigrants from immigration fraud, stop the unauthorized practice of law, regulate immigration service providers, and add consumer protections for those that need assistance in immigration matters.
“The reality is immigration law should be handled by those who understand the law and have been trained so they can correctly file documents and adequately represent their clients,” said Caballero.
"We applaud the Assembly for approving AB 638. Today we move one step closer to ensure our immigrant communities aren't defrauded and placed in deportation proceedings due to malpractice by immigration consultants. We look forward to swift action by the State Senate,” said Angelica Salas, Executive Director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA).
Assemblymember Anna M. Caballero is the Chair of the Agriculture committee, of the California State Assembly. She represents the 30th District, composed of the Salinas Valley, parts of Monterey and San Benito counties, South Santa Clara County, and the city of Watsonville.
