SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay) issued the following statement in response to Senate Bill 577:
"I am heartened that SB 577 will not be advancing this year. While the bill sought to balance the needs of institutions and survivors, it unfortunately would have had reverberating consequences for survivors of sexual assault going forward.
In 2023, my bill, AB 452, the Justice for Survivors Act, made California a leader in providing survivors the freedom from the arbitrary barriers of time. Children who experienced unspeakable abuse can now seek justice at any age. We must protect that progress and continue to remove hurdles for survivors who have already carried so much.
For decades, I have stood with survivors and their families in the effort to strengthen rights and ensure their voices are heard. I am grateful for the countless individuals and organizations that coalesced in the discussion around SB 577 and brought their perspectives to light.
The work continues, and I will not waver when it comes to supporting policies that provide a fair path to justice for survivors."
Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
